Q This week we begin a new literary movement. Keep the Romantics in mind, as the period before a new movement almost always heavily influences the next. The Notes under "Modules" on Tennyson should have provided enough for you to have a basic understanding of "The Lady of Shalott." For Ulysses, if you didn't pick up on it already, the poem is a reference to Odysseus (Ulysses is the Latin name for Odysseus). Most of you have probably read The Odyssey, and if not, you are at least aware of it as an important text in Greek Mythology. The poem, a dramatic monologue, tells the story of the aging hero after he returns home from his quest. He is an aging, restless King who nostalgically thinks of past adventures. After reading both Tennyson poems, what kinds of thematic parallels can you draw between them?
